Cancer is a scary word to hear, says Abbey after she was diagnosed. But she took to her community for support, care and compassion in a time of unknowns. She began to fundraise for others going through cancer treatment at the Walker Family Cancer Centre.

The laboratory plays a crucial role in diagnosing and treating patients at Niagara Health, although the work often takes place behind the scenes. Earlier this year, Niagara Health Foundation donors raised $358,845 for the purchase of two state-of-the-art Lab Stainers, which are an important tool for diagnosing cancer.

Thanks to our amazing community of Niagara Health Foundation donors, we are proud to share that over 20 stretchers have been purchased for our local Emergency Departments over the past few months. Having critical equipment like these stretchers is about patients’ dignity and comfort, and we couldn’t provide that kind of care without the help of the Foundation and the help of donors.
Surabhi Chawla’s journey with cancer started well before her own diagnosis, when her mother survived breast cancer but later died from a secondary cancer. It was nearly 10 years later when Surabhi got a phone call after one of her routine MRI mammograms to come back for further testing. It is estimated that about one in eight Canadian women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime, so early detection is crucial. Niagara Health performs thousands of mammograms every year, and Niagara Health Foundation is proud to share that aging mammography equipment was recently replaced with new, state-of-the-art devices, thanks to the generosity of community donors.
The Sleep Lab is one of the quieter areas of the hospital, but they still see over a thousand patients a year. Sleep studies are not just about getting good sleep, they save lives. With the help of the Niagara Health Foundation the Sleep Lab has replaced all three of its systems and the team could not be more grateful for this state-of-the-art, life saving equipment.
Around the holidays, Alexandria and the team at the Children’s Health Unit try to ensure that the kids have a magical time, even under the most difficult circumstances.
