The Niagara Health Foundation is grateful to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation for its generous gift of $7,198 in support of Niagara Health’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Founded in memory of Olympic curling champion Sandra Schmirler, the Foundation has spent more than two decades supporting premature and critically ill babies across Canada by funding life saving equipment and family-centred initiatives in neonatal intensive care units. Their mission is rooted in ensuring every newborn has the best possible start in life while helping families navigate one of the most challenging journeys they may ever face.
Representing the Niagara Health Foundation was Shannon, Development Officer, whose own son spent time in the NICU. That experience gave her a firsthand understanding of the emotions families face and the importance of creating spaces that provide comfort alongside exceptional care.
One project especially close to Shannon’s heart is Niagara Health Foundation’s Baby Wall. Thoughtfully designed as a peaceful forest, the installation celebrates NICU graduates while bringing the calming presence of nature into the unit. Shannon shared that during her family’s NICU journey, one of the things she missed most was being outdoors. Creating a space that offers hope, beauty, and a reminder of life beyond the hospital walls for future families has made this project deeply meaningful to her.
Representing the Sandra Schmirler Foundation was Peter, who also experienced the NICU as a parent. He shared that when you’re in a hospital surrounded by fear and uncertainty, one thing becomes incredibly clear:
“When you’re in a hospital surrounded by fear and uncertainty, one thing becomes incredibly clear,” he said. “Perspective.”
“As parents, your entire world narrows to your child,” he reflected. “You look around the NICU and see babies who are healthier than yours, and others who are facing even greater challenges. It reminds you to hold gratitude alongside your worry.”
That perspective stayed with Peter long after his family left the NICU. Today, through his work with the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, he has the opportunity to help other families facing similar journeys. His family’s story is a powerful reminder that philanthropy is often deeply personal.
In many ways, Shannon’s story mirrors Peter’s. Both experienced the uncertainty of having a child in the NICU. Today, both have the privilege of standing on the other side of that journey, helping create moments of comfort, healing, and hope for families who find themselves where they once stood.
Together, their stories are a powerful reminder that philanthropy is often deeply personal. Gifts like this do more than fund equipment they create environments where families feel seen, supported, and reminded that they are not alone during some of life’s most difficult days.
Niagara Health Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation for their donation, which funded the purchase of a new specialized crib for the NICU, helping ensure Niagara’s tiniest patients can receive extraordinary care, close to home.
