Cardiorespiratory Monitors

Cardiorespiratory Monitors

Thanks to our amazing community of donors, Niagara Health has purchased ten new cardiorespiratory monitors for our Children’s Health (CHU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). These devices track the vitals of our tiniest patients.

Our teams at the CHU and NICU are grateful for every person who supports the purchase of this life-saving equipment with their donations. “The donations are so appreciated,” says Harsevoort. As Niagara’s population grows, she adds, so does the need for neonatal and pediatric care. “We really rely on the community to provide the best quality care. The generosity of Niagara Health Foundation donors has enabled us to buy this equipment.”

Phototherapy Lights

Thanks to your donations, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has new phototherapy lights for our tiniest patients. Since their livers are not fully developed yet, premature babies are often jaundiced. The special blue light emitted by the phototherapy lamp is absorbed by the baby’s skin, and gives them the little bit of extra help they need.
“We are so thankful for this new equipment,” says Laura Harsevoort, Manager of the NICU and Children’s Health. “It allows us to provide the best possible care to the babies in the NICU.” In the past year alone, Niagara Health provided phototherapy to 314 babies across the Post Partum, Neonatal and Children’s Health Units.

C-Arm

Another amazing piece of equipment that was purchased in January was a surgical C-Arm. It is a specialized real-time medical imaging device that is used by vascular surgeons at Niagara Health. The “C” shape allows the imaging device to rotate around the patient during surgery, capturing images from different perspectives. “The addition of the new unit will create much needed capacity, supporting Niagara Health’s goal to decrease wait times,” says Susan Kinnear, Manager of Diagnostic Imaging. “It will benefit thousands of patients in the region. Thank you for this generous and valuable donation.”

Linear Accelerator

Thanks to your incredible generosity, an aging linear accelerator is currently being replaced with a brand new model. Our team has been working on the radiation bunker renovations for months, and we are so pleased to share that this equipment will soon be available to patients here in Niagara. It is designed to deliver radiation therapy with incredible accuracy, focusing on cancerous areas while protecting nearby healthy tissue. This state-of-the-art equipment is especially helpful for patients needing a second round of radiation as it can carefully shape the radiation to avoid areas that were already treated.

Mason Power Poles

In 2023, we received an incredibly special delivery of 25 “Mason’s Power Poles.” These IV poles are designed and handcrafted to give children with illnesses a positive symbol to look up to and brighten up the hospital rooms of our youngest patients. Seeing these arrive and be delivered to our Children’s Health Unit was touching for patients, their families and healthcare workers.

MRI Machine

One of our highlights in 2023 was the arrival of two MRI machines at the Marotta Family Hospital in St. Catharines. Thanks to your commitment and tireless support, people from all across Niagara who are waiting for a scan have shorter wait times and access to state-of-the-art machines that are equipped with the latest technology and software.

Medical Imaging Table

Because of you, a much-needed new fluoroscopy table for the Vascular Surgery department has been purchased. Having an additional operating table increases the number of vascular surgeries that can take place at Niagara Health. Vascular Surgeon Dr. Craig Durant is grateful for everyone who chooses to donate to the Niagara Health Foundation, “I hope donors can see how their support makes a huge difference for patient care.”
