New Stretchers for the Emergency Department

Thanks to our amazing community of Niagara Health Foundation donors, we are proud to share that over 20 stretchers have been purchased for our local Emergency Departments over the past few months.

“I am so grateful for the Foundation and each and every donor who made this possible,” says Shauna Speck, Clinical Manager for the Welland Emergency Department (ED). “Stretchers are used all the time in the ED,” Shauna explains. “These new ones are an amazing addition to our fleet. Not only do they increase the number of stretchers we have available, they also have some amazing new features. They are easier to maneuver for our staff and more comfortable for patients.”
One special feature is the ability to lower the stretcher, which reduces the risk of falls and makes it easier for the staff to help patients get on and off.
“Sitting in a chair for hours can get uncomfortable, so we really want to be able to offer a stretcher to anyone who needs it,” Shauna says. Having enough stretchers available at the ED also helps address Niagara’s long offload times for Emergency Medical Services (EMS). “We want our paramedics to be out in the community, so having stretchers available means we can offload swiftly and get EMS back on their way to respond to 911 calls.”
To Shauna, working in the ED is a privilege. “I love our team here. We are like a family and we work hard every day to ensure patients receive dignity and comfort during the most difficult times in their lives. Nobody comes here because they’re having a good day, and I believe the most important thing we can do is be the best part of somebody’s worst day.”
Having the right equipment is an important part of that work, Shauna explains, and she is grateful for Niagara Health Foundation donors. “I don’t think people know the impact they have by making even a small donation. Even one piece of equipment really does change somebody’s life. Having critical equipment like these stretchers is about patients’ dignity and comfort, and we couldn’t provide that kind of care without the help of the Foundation and the help of donors. Thank you.”
