“I knew I had to donate.”
Earlier this summer, our donor Lynne walked away from the St. Catharines Site Breast Cancer Screening Centre and straight to the Niagara Health Foundation office to make a donation.
“Everyone involved in my care was so compassionate and gentle. I was really touched by how genuinely they cared about me, so I said: no matter what my results may be, I am donating.”
Lynne decided to make a Gift of Gratitude to thank the team at the St. Catharines Breast Cancer Screening Centre after a recent mammogram showed something that needed further investigation. “I have been getting mammograms for many years, and I am always grateful for the letters that remind me when I am due for one again. The first time something was flagged on a mammogram was around six years ago, then again four years ago, but both times the follow-up ultrasounds confirmed that there was nothing to be concerned about. When I went back for one this past May, however, they saw something that was different.”
Lynne was scheduled for a biopsy with Dr. Bonifacio, and she was grateful for the wonderful care she received. “The team talked me through every step, answered my questions, and made sure I understood everything. They were so good to me, and I knew right then and there that I had to donate to give back and say thank you.”
Earlier this year, Lynne’s husband was diagnosed with stage four terminal cancer. The care he received from when he first came to the emergency room to being diagnosed and now treated and supported has been very good. “The entire team in oncology – nurses, doctors, nutritionists – too many to mention – they’re amazing. They are encouraging, supportive, they have such a positive attitude, we’re very grateful.”
Today, Lynne is also thankful to know that the results from her biopsy came back negative, a big relief as she continues to walk the path alongside her husband. “When my dad had health issues years ago, we constantly had to go to Toronto. We are so fortunate to have well-equipped hospitals and caring healthcare professionals so close to us, so I think everyone should do what they can to help.”
