Just Say Thank You!

One of the first times our donor Cindi Sonnenberg came to Niagara Health was when her son, Kiefer 10 years old at the time was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. “He said to me: as long as I don’t need needles, I will be fine. It broke my heart. But everyone at the hospital was so kind and thoughtful, and considerate. It made this very scary moment for my son and our family so much easier to bear.”

At that time, Cindi didn’t know that in 2016, Niagara Health would once again become a big part of her life. “My mom, Elizabeth was diagnosed with breast cancer. She needed surgery and radiation, and not long after, my sister, Laura was also diagnosed with breast cancer. Laura’s was more advanced than my mom’s, so she needed chemotherapy, surgery and radiation.” The now-retired Dr. Giesbrecht was the oncologist for both Cindi’s mom and sister, and Cindi couldn’t be more grateful for her. “The supports available to us, to my sister and mother – they were just excellent. We are very close in my family, so when my sister had to go in for her appointments, she often had her two daughters by her side, as well as our parents, which was always accommodated. The Walker Family Cancer Centre team was sympathetic and supportive and did whatever they could to make this difficult time manageable for her and our whole family.”

Cindi’s parents are both volunteers at Niagara Health – yet another way her family chooses to pay it forward. “We had very positive experiences when we needed Niagara Health. Dr. Giesbrecht, the volunteers, the nurses, the technicians – they are amazing.” Most importantly, Cindi’s mom and sister are both cancer-free.

Donating to the Niagara Health Foundation is a no-brainer for Cindi. “To me, supporting the Niagara Health Foundation is a great investment in our future. These dollars go towards tangible things that improve the patient’s care. I think it’s important for people to realize that the staff at Niagara Health are working very hard, so just say thank you! Whether it’s through a donation or a kind word – just say thank you.”
