Paying tribute to John G. Walker

Our Niagara Health System hospitals and our Niagara community lost a true ally on
Thursday, May 26, 2016 with the passing of John Walker. Personally and in the name of
the Walker Family and Walker Industries, his commitment to local healthcare was
By stepping up as the It’s Our Time Campaign’s Honorary Co-Chair and pace-setting
donor to the new regional cancer centre, John’s leadership and philanthropy
galvanized support behind the largest healthcare fundraising campaign ever
undertaken in Niagara at the time. Beyond the funding support that he was quick
to extend, John threw his heart, soul and influence into bringing world-class
cancer care to Niagara, and in doing so left his mark on Niagara in a way that won’t
soon be forgotten.
The Walker Family Cancer Centre represents only one of many healthcare initiatives
John helped to spearhead. Throughout his life, John looked for opportunities to
use his means and talents to benefit others – a philanthropist in the truest sense of
the word.
Following in the footsteps of generations of community-minded family members,
John exemplied what it means to be a builder – not only as it relates to
infrastructure, but also to the vital community services that enrich our health and
quality of life. For this, all Niagarans owe him a debt of gratitude.
