Meet Abby – a girl with a big heart

August 03, 2017

Thirteen year old Abby Klassen brought smiles to many OneFoundation and Niagara Health staff  this past week through a touching donation close to her heart.

Abby, daughter of Julie Klassen, a Chemotherapy Nurse at the Walker Family Cancer Centre, recently hosted a lemonade stand in support of the cancer centre alongside her family’s garage sale. Armed with a special recipe, cheerful paper umbrellas and a million dollar smile on a hot summer’s day, Abby sold her lemonade to thirsty folks for 50 cents a glass. She even sold a few of her Barbie dolls to customers to help increase the donation to the cancer centre – her charity of choice.

“Abby is a sweet little girl with a big heart,” says Julie. “She always takes interest in the work that I do at the Walker Family Cancer Centre and often asks when I get home if anything interesting happened to me at work that day.”

In total, Abby raised $105.  With her donation, she included a special hand-written note explaining her gift to Dr. Janice Giesbrecht, Niagara Health’s Medical Director of Oncology.

Thank you Abby! Your donation will help make a difference to patients receiving care at the Walker Family Cancer Centre (maybe from your Mom!) and has inspired many hospital staff as well as followers of OneFoundation’s and Niagara Health’s social media sites.

Abby’s next charitable initiative: She’s volunteering with her mom and a number of other cancer centre staff at OneFoundation’s Big Move Cancer Ride on September 10, 2017. This will be her 5th year doing so!
