Kidney Care

The past 50 years has seen remarkable progress in Kidney Care – in that time, kidney failure has gone from being considered a fatal illness to a managed chronic disease.  The Niagara Health System is the regional provider of renal (kidney) services for patients in Niagara offering education, support and intervention to approximately 1,000 area residents living with kidney disease.

Therapy in the home is an option for a growing number of patients.  Portable dialysis units give patients more control over their treatment schedule which enhances autonomy and independence.

For those who require the support of a clinical team to assist with care, a total of 72 hemodialysis stations operate at the region’s three Kidney Care sites: the Niagara Falls Kidney Care Center (18 dialysis stations), the Welland Hospital Site (24 stations) and the St. Catharines Site (30 stations) which acts as the hub.  The NHS KC Program supports nearly 400 patients who require hemodialysis three to five times per week in a supportive care setting.

When hospitalization is required, the new St. Catharines Site has dedicated Nephrology (Kidney) beds.  These acute care beds are dedicated to patients who require temporary 24-hour access to specialized renal care.

From high-tech medical equipment to a transport van supporting home dialysis patients, generous donors have helped to remarkably enhance kidney care services in Niagara.
