5th Annual Pasta for Prostate Cancer fundraiser pays tribute to founder

November 13, 2015

OneFoundation for Niagara Health System’s community partners, the Roberto Family, invite you to join them for the 5th Annual Pasta for Prostate Cancer on Sunday, November 22, 2015 at Strada West in Niagara Falls.  The event offers guests homemade Italian fare and raises funds and awareness for prostate cancer care at Niagara Health System.

This year, the annual fundraiser is extra special for hosts, the Roberto Family, as the event is being held in loving memory of Tony Roberto.

Roberto, who owned the popular Casa d’Oro restaurant in Niagara Falls, founded Pasta for Prostate Cancer in 2011 soon after he was diagnosed with the same type of cancer.  A charitable person always thinking of others, he wanted to make a difference in the local fight against prostate cancer and decided to support this area of care at Niagara Health System.

“During this difficult year we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate his life, with continuing his vision through the annual Pasta for Prostate dinner,” says Louisa Johnstone, Roberto’s daughter.

“His traditions were always very important to him and he would be honoured to see this event continue to grow and achieve more than he could have ever hoped for.  Through the kindness and generosity of others, and now the guidance of OneFoundation, hopefully we can make an impact for local patients,” continues Johnstone.

Since the inaugural event, $31,000 has been raised for Niagara Health System's Prostate Diagnostic Assessment Program at the Walker Family Cancer Centre.  The clinic is the first of its kind in Niagara and is designed to improve quality of care and reduce wait times for men with suspected prostate cancer.  Goals include enhancing coordination of care, improving communication among patients, families and their healthcare providers, and reducing wait times for test results and consultation.  Since opening in September 2014, 694 patients have visited the clinic and 227 have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

To uphold Roberto’s legacy of giving, his family has pledged a total of $100,000 in support of a Surveillance Database Project for the Prostate Diagnostic Assessment Program.

“This project will allow us to monitor our patients more closely to be sure each patient stays on their schedule of follow-up and to recognize early changes so that intervention can be successful,” says Dr. Ian Brown, the program’s lead urologist.  “Thank you to the Roberto Family and all Pasta for Prostate Cancer supporters for helping to fund this very important care tool.”

Tickets for Pasta for Prostate Cancer are $15 each and include a delicious homemade Italian meal of pasta and meatballs.  Reserve your seat by calling Strada West at 905-371-2272.  The fundraiser runs from 12 to 8 p.m.
