It’s Our Time Campaign – taking Niagara healthcare to the next level!

June 01, 2014

The $40-million It’s Our Time Campaign needed to overhaul the region’s multi-site hospital system was the largest goal ever attempted for any healthcare initiative in Niagara.  The mission – to bring vital new regional health services to Niagara; to replace the aging St. Catharines hospitals; and to revitalize other South Niagara sites through upgrades and redevelopment.

Thanks to generous and dedicated community leaders, volunteers and donors, the Campaign team succeeded in surpassing this ambitious goal.  With the opening of the new St. Catharines Hospital Site on March 24th, 2013, Niagara now boasts a ‘gold standard’ of health facilities that has forever changed the landscape of local healthcare.  Niagara residents can now access medical services locally that previously required travel to Hamilton and Toronto.

Notable advancements made possible by the Campaign include:

  • the Walker Family Cancer Centre offering comprehensive cancer care including radiation therapy
  • the state-of-the-art Heart Investigation Unit (HIU), which has introduced much-needed diagnostic cardiac catheterization services and interventional care to the region for first time modern, purpose-built Mental Health facilities which allow for longer term stays
  • leading-edge regional Kidney Care Program operating from a St. Catharines Site hub with satellite locations in Welland and Niagara Falls
  • Medical Academic/Education facilities that support a ‘culture of learning’ and put the NHS on track to graduate 28 doctors annually in partnership with McMaster’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine

The true success story of the It’s Our Time Campaign goes beyond the facilities and technology.  It’s an achievement that affirms a commitment to providing the best possible patient care for the people of Niagara.

Throughout construction of the new St. Catharines hospital, a million square-feet of care’became the watchwords that kept construction crews and staff focused on the ultimate goal.
